As great as it is to cut out the commute and be with the kids more than you ever were, working from home has its own set of challenges that you’ll want to embrace in order to help keep your sanity and achieve some sort of work done. One important way to mitigate this is to establish space and time boundaries with your kids. When they are told that “mommy or daddy is at work when they are in their home office,” kids are able to delineate that even though mommy or daddy is in the house, they are not available for playtime and need to be left alone for a few hours.  

I Am Not A Highly Self-Motivated Person

There’s going to be plenty of alone time when you work from home. Sometimes, a bit too much alone time! Once you get settled into your routine, you can quickly become demotivated, unproductive, or bored, or even lonely. Every individual is most productive and motivated at different times of the day. For example, some individuals are morning people, and they are most productive and focused during the morning hours. For others, their most productive time in the workday is the evenings. If you struggle with staying on task while working from home, then you may need to kick things up a notch and use a time management app. Using a time tracker app will help you see your productivity levels each day and week. This will not only provide you with insight as to when you are most productive during the day, but it will also show you how much time you spend on each task. I Lack A Dedicated Workspace

When you’re working from home for the first time, it’s tempting to pick up your laptop, plop down on the couch, and go about your workday. But unless you’re living alone (and, honestly, even then), this is a mistake. The problem? It’s difficult to focus on work when you’re in the same room your kids are using to dance to the “Frozen” soundtrack. It’s also tempting to watch some television for “an hour”. Instead, designate an area of your home specifically for getting work done. This could be a spare bedroom that you can convert to a home office, or a dedicated desk off the kitchen area. Regardless of the space or location, establish an area of your home where you will work, and commit to working in this space every day. Be sure your workspace is quiet so you can focus on the task at hand.   It takes more than a high-speed internet connection and video conferencing to work from home effectively.
